Just like you visit the dentist or service your car, all mechanical watches need regular maintenance. 
An annual interim service is recommended to check your watch is watertight, as the rubber seals can deteriorate under certain conditions. 
Every three to five years NOMOS recommend they perform a complete revision.  After this period the lubrication may have evaporated, which would cause wear and tear to the metal parts if not addressed.
